This doesn't mean abandoning the genre you are currently doing of course but I think it does indicate that the rock classic albums and artists had something in common. Songs. Yes, it's as simple as having really strong songs. Songs that can stand the test of time will undoubtably be the songs that wont get lost in the thousands of 'nameless' releases. Something else 'classic' bands have that 'ordinary/unknown' bands have is a distinctive style, when you can identify an artist by the opening seconds of a song, that's a good sign.
But maybe you're not looking for that kind of 'fame' which is ok too, so just have fun and do what you love.
The bottom line is, if you're looking for a genre that will keep you current and on top of the latest sound trend, you'll be chasing your tail forever. Just play from your heart and do what feels right.
